鈥淭he gala concert is always one of our department鈥檚 highlights,鈥 said Griffing. 鈥淲e鈥檙e especially pleased that this year鈥檚 concert brings together so many voices and instruments to celebrate the legacy and traditions of music during 91短视频鈥檚 Centennial.鈥

Symphony

Keebaugh was commissioned by 91短视频 to write the symphony in honor of the university鈥檚 first century. He has been thinking about and working on it for three years, and wrote five versions before landing on the final.

The result is Symphony No. 1 for baritone, choir and string orchestra, an 鈥渆thereal type of peaceful, calming music鈥 with the text 鈥淒ona nobis pacem: Grant us peace,鈥 he said.

The symphony begins with a prayer that choir members read at their own pace, creating an 鈥渦ndertone rumble of individual prayer.鈥 But right at the moment when the strings begin playing, the choristers say the same prayer, this time all together, and 鈥渢he whole community comes together, with this idea of peace,鈥 Keebaugh said.

鈥淚 wanted to show the ethos of 91短视频,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 looked at, 鈥榃hat have I experienced? What have I been taught? What do I learn from my colleagues about what it means to be here at 91短视频, to be in a community like this?鈥 I wanted to paint that picture.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 as simple as it gets, but it hits at the depth of 91短视频,鈥 he said.

An answer

Keebaugh joined the music department faculty in 2013, and said that the department shows 鈥渓ove, compassion and generosity鈥 for its students.

鈥淢usic really can embody a community of love鈥 that Keebaugh said is 鈥渙ur answer鈥 to the world鈥檚 problems, distress and disasters.

鈥淲e nurture all of our students,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e change our musical structure and curricula to fit what鈥檚 going to make them successful. It鈥檚 not just 鈥楬ere鈥檚 our box, and you have to fit it.鈥欌

Creative people, Keebaugh knows firsthand, all have different ways of working. He composes with paper and pencil, during regular early morning work sessions that begin at 3 a.m., and only uses a computer in final stages, he said 鈥 鈥渂ut that鈥檚 just me. I鈥檓 old school.鈥
