The winner of the spring 2018 C. Henry Smith Oratorical Contest at 91短视频 has placed second at the contest鈥檚 final, bi-national level.
Caleb Schrock Hurst, currently in Vietnam for a year-long service placement with the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) program Serving and Learning Together, spoke on 鈥溾業s This a Bonhoeffer Moment?鈥: Asking the Right Questions in Trump鈥檚 America.鈥 His speech 鈥 and the others presented at 91短视频 last spring 鈥 can be heard here.
Winners of the , established in 1974 by the directors of the C. Henry Smith Trust, were announced in August.聽First place was awarded to Sarah Balzer of Bethel College for 鈥淓nvironment Inequalities in the Age of Plastic,鈥 and third place went to Achieng Agutu of Goshen College for 鈥淭he Introduction: A Story of Inner Peace.鈥
The intercollegiate competition offers students an opportunity to discuss the application of the Christian peace position to contemporary concerns in an 8-10-minute speech. It is administered by the Peace and Justice Ministries of MCC.
C. Henry Smith was an American Mennonite historian and professor at Mennonite colleges and the University of Chicago. He taught history for nearly 50 years at the collegiate level, and was well-known for his numerous books on Mennonite history and his particular attention to the peace commitments of the Mennonite tradition.
