The tapestry of your life has been interwoven with intensely colorful strands, with golden threads throughout. As your freshman roommate, I could tell way back in 1968, that you were a capable academic! So thankful you discovered your calling and loved it so much. You may be retiring, but I won’t believe for a minute that you are done yet!

I learned a lot from the way you presented New Testament teachings at Eastern Mennonite Seminary When I was a seminary student. I hope, as you retire, but not tired, you will have some classes to teach at the seminary. You have a wealth of abundant knowledge that will be the fountain of hope to others as well. I wish you the best the retirement will bring forth to you.

You were a newborn baby when I first learned about you. Your mother had recently been widowed, and I remember meeting her on College Avenue by the chapel and feeling the suffering that the C. K. Lehman family and the whole Park View community had just recently experienced. I was a freshman but I knew about the Chester and Myra hospitality because earlier my parents had stayed at their place on a visit to EMS. The Melvin Weaver tragedy had touched everybody: people I would come to know in my life, your teacher mother my classmate and colleague, your student sisters, my Bible Doc and Ethics professor, and finally YOU. How your family all enriched my life!

How glad I am that we have been friends a long time! I’m an EMHS/EMC/91¶ÌÊÓƵ retiree. How dare you retire already? I think when you graduated from EMHS I might have written–as I often autographed the Ember senior pics–“I shall follow your career with interest.” I have done it. God continue to bless your life.

Thanks! My first “knowing” you came in high school when your mother and I were friends and she had these three lovely daughters. Then I have followed you with various re-connecting over the years. Thanks for always being authentic you whom God loves and lives through.

As a French minor myself, I love your reflections on language learning. Thank you for being an intellectual and spiritual mentor to so many students at EMS over the decades!

There is much here that I never knew, but I do remember our summer in Quebec! May the good humor of God continue to show you new ways to enjoy life!

In her classes one gained the skills not to impose one’s own viewpoints on Scripture but to listen to it and see it, itself, and to meet the real people there. I know this even though I was never enrolled in EMS. Instead, she and other EMS professors welcomed into their classes when I was asked to assist a seminary student who was a Chinese pastor. I know this, also, because I have been reading her mind-opening book, THE IRONY OF POWER: THE POLITICS OF GOD WITHIN MATTHEW’S NARRATIVE.

A thoughtful reflection on a deeply passionate, well-lived life.
