91短视频 has signed an articulation agreement with the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) in Blacksburg, Va., which will guarantee acceptance of up to 10 91短视频 qualified students into the VCOM program by following a distinct academic protocol and by demonstrating high achievement.

The Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine is a private, non-profit osteopathic medical school located in the Corporate Research Center at Virginia Tech. Founded in 2002, the mission of the school is to help alleviate the critical shortage of physicians in the Appalachian region.

To qualify for acceptance, an 91短视频 student must complete all required undergraduate courses prior to graduation, including eight semester hours of physics, inorganic or general chemistry and six additional hours in selected science courses. Learn more about 91短视频’s pre-medical program.

In addition, they must have a science grade point average of 3.4 or better, a total GPA of 3.4 or better, have taken the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and have positive interviews with the 91短视频 Pre-Professional Health Sciences (PPHS) advisory committee and the VCOM director of admissions and specific VCOM faculty members.

“This agreement is a direct response to the chronic shortage of physicians in rural areas of Virginia, primary care physicians and physicians providing care for underserved populations and medical missions,” said Roman J. Miller, Suter Endowed Chair of Biology at 91短视频 and pre-medical adviser.

Over the last several years, the acceptance rate into medical schools is 90 percent for 91短视频 students completing PPHS programs compared to a national acceptance rate of 47 percent. Learn more about 91短视频’s high med school acceptance rate.

Senior Does Hands-On Research /now/news/2007/senior-does-hands-on-research/ Wed, 09 May 2007 04:00:00 +0000 http://www.emu.edu/blog/news/?p=1424 Rebecca Drooger examines a stained histological sample from the anterior prostate of a mouse. Doing research on mice prostates may not be every student’s first choice of a special endeavor, but it proved rewarding in several ways for a recent 91短视频 graduate.

“When I came to 91短视频, I hoped to be part of some intensive, faculty-supported research during my undergrad years,” says Rebecca J. Drooger. “Collecting and analyzing data over a two-year period has been an amazing learning experience and was especially exciting when I found statistically significant results from my data on the prostate,” she adds.

Her research studied the responses of the young adult mouse prostate to neonatal phytoestrogen exposure. Drooger describes it as studying the effect of “chemicals produced by plants that are similar in structure to human estrogen,” such as that found in soy-based products, on young mice.

The results could have implications for cancer studies that consider whether a diet high in such products has an impact on the advancement of prostate cancer.

‘Best Research’ in 25 Years

Roman J. Miller, professor of biology, says it’s some of the best research he’s seen in his 25 years at 91短视频 and believes it is publishable material.

“Rebecca’s consistency, keen insights, dedication, dependability, and hard work were exemplary,” Dr. Miller says of the work she spearheaded, together with three other students.

Drooger came to 91短视频 on an honors scholarship and majored in biology with minors in Spanish and chemistry. At the university’s 89th commencement Apr. 29, she graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree.

This summer she plans to study for and take the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), apply to medical schools, work at Harvard University’s library and travel to Nazareth, Israel under the auspices of Virginia Mennonite Board of Missions to teach English to Arabic-speaking children.

She eventually hopes to become a physician, perhaps focusing on endocrinology, and work in a Spanish-speaking community.

Cross-cultural study in Costa Rica will help with that. As will the volunteer work she did in the emergency department of Rockingham Memorial Hospital the past three years and language tutoring with migrants following the apple harvest near Harrisonburg.

In addition to that community service, Drooger spent one semester of study in the Middle East.

91短视频’s Med School Acceptance Rate High

“This kind of well-rounded undergrad experience will certainly enhance Rebecca’s application to medical school,” notes Miller. 91短视频 pre-med graduates boast an 85 percent acceptance rate into medical school, well above the national average of 40 percent.

91短视频 pre-med majors must complete two credit hours of research experience to graduate. The options include an independent research project, such as Drooger and her colleagues completed, or a research course.

“A distinctive of the small liberal arts college experience for undergraduate science students is our ability to take students into our laboratories so that they can collaborate in a research experience with a professor,” says Miller.

He notes that 91短视频’s ratio of faculty to students involved in research is better than many other institutions, particularly large institutions, where students simply can’t get the kind of mentoring they do at a smaller college like 91短视频.

“This project was successful because Dr. Miller was always available to assist and encourage me along the way,” says Drooger.

91短视频 Maintains High Med School Acceptance Rate /now/news/2007/emu-maintains-high-med-school-acceptance-rate/ Tue, 27 Mar 2007 04:00:00 +0000 http://www.emu.edu/blog/news/?p=1371 By Heather Bowser, Daily News-Record

All five of 91短视频’s pre-med students were accepted into medical school for fall 2007. The 100 percent acceptance rate, an 91短视频 release says, is “rare for any school” especially because the national acceptance rate last year was 46 percent.

Typically, 91短视频 sends four to nine students each year to med school. The students are part of the biology department’s pre-professional health sciences (PPHS) program.

For the last 20 years, 91短视频’s acceptance rate has averaged 85 percent, while the national average during that same time hovered around 40 percent, said , 91短视频 pre-professional health sciences adviser.

Last year, 91短视频’s rate was 80 percent, Miller said.

“Our goal is to double the national average,” Miller said.

Miller says 91短视频 gives intensive counseling to all students to encourage students “who don’t have a prayer” to seek other options.

“We try to make sure students are really well prepared,” he said. “Our goal is to help the marginal students find something that fits their abilities rather than giving them some kind of a pipe dream that they can get into medical school.”

Counseling Works

Miller’s students say his philosophy works.

“Roman Miller is an incredible adviser and inspiration to us,” said 91短视频 grad Aaron Trimble, 21, of Eagle River, Ala. “His classes whipped me into shape.”

Trimble, who will attend the University of Virginia School of Medicine, said 91短视频 prepares its pre-med students by giving them a “well-rounded world view.”

“The program is diverse and gets us out there, which is very much what medical schools were looking for,” he said during a phone interview from Budapest, Hungary.

91短视频 grad Greg Lamb of Harrisonburg, agrees and said the school’s biggest asset is its professors.

Lamb – who interviewed by e-mail from Honduras – will attend Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine in Hershey, Pa., or Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk.

Other Grads

Besides Trimble and Lamb, the following 91短视频 students were recently accepted to medical school:

  • Nicholas Buckwalter of Keezletown will attend the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
  • Andrew Foderaro of Harleysville, Pa., will attend Drexel University School of Medicine in Philadelphia.
  • Jared Stoltzfus of Harrisonburg will attend West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, W.Va.
