This year鈥檚 Lov91短视频 Giving Day was an out-of-the-park grand slam, and we鈥檙e not just talking about the one hit by a Royals slugger at Wednesday鈥檚 baseball game.

The eighth annual giving day extravaganza, held on Wednesday, April 10, was bigger than previous years 鈥 featuring a number of new events that amped up the Lov91短视频 spirit 鈥 and raised more money than ever before. A total of $340,512 was raised throughout the 24-hour event, cruising past the $325,000 goal set by organizers and eclipsing the $300,915 raised last year (a 13% increase).

鈥淚 am blown away by the support from this community,鈥 said Lov91短视频 organizer Nicole Litwiller 鈥19, MA 鈥20 (conflict transformation), annual giving and donor communication specialist. 鈥淣ot only did we raise over $340,000, which is in itself a massive accomplishment, but we also saw the 91短视频 community (from current students, to alumni, to faculty and staff) show up for this day to make each event special and full of joy.”

91短视频 students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends shared what they loved most about 91短视频 online (using the #91短视频GivingDay and #StrongerTogether hashtags) and on campus. They showed up and showed out at Lov91短视频 Giving Day events held throughout the day. And, they gave like never before, unlocking all $125,000+ of challenge match funds for The University Fund, student scholarships, athletics, and Royal Women for 91短视频.

This year saw the return of the leaderboard competition. For every $10 donation they made, supporters could vote for an academic program, student club/organization and athletic team. The winners of those categories 鈥 Music (85 votes), The Weather Vane (37 votes), and Men鈥檚 Soccer (192 votes) 鈥 each won $1,000. View the second-place and third-place winners, which received $500 and $250, on the Lov91短视频 website at .

Here鈥檚 a recap of the events and unlocked challenges that made Lov91短视频 Giving Day 2024 a smashing success:

Events

Inspired by the 鈥80s theme in our leading up to the event, folks at 91短视频 showed up to campus looking like they just left an aerobics workout class 鈥 think teased hair, neon blue eyeshadow and neon windbreakers, warm-up jackets, legwarmers and headbands 鈥 while rocking out to hits from the decade.

Hundreds pack Yoder Arena for Wednesday morning’s pep rally, a new addition to Lov91短视频 Giving Day this year.

Those attending the morning鈥檚 pep rally got a sweet start to their day with doughnuts (each representing the cost of an 91短视频 education that donors cover). The 91短视频 pep band added electricity to the first-ever Lov91短视频 pep rally, while emcees Braydon Hoover 鈥11, MA 鈥21 (organizational leadership) and Harrisonburg, Virginia, Mayor Deanna Reed pumped up the crowd.

Nora Osei 鈥15, an 91短视频 basketball and soccer player who now works as director of growth and partnerships for Nike Sports Camps, shared her tips for finding success. 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 have to be a standout athlete or student at 91短视频 to find success,鈥 she told the crowd. 91短视频 senior psychology major and multi-sport athlete Kate Landis talked about the highlights of her last four years at 91短视频. Admitted student Megan Smith said she had visited 10 other colleges and did not consider 91短视频 as a possibility. But, after seeing the clean campus, enjoying the good food at the dining hall and learning about the strong nursing program, she said 91短视频 felt like home. 鈥淢y mom and I got back into our car and we looked at each other and said, 鈥楾his is the right place,鈥欌 said Smith.

Also new this year was the addition of Admitted Student Day to the Lov91短视频 Day and SGA Day festivities. More than 20 admitted students visited the campus for the day, taking tours, learning about programs at the University Fair and panel discussions and participating in the spirited Lov91短视频 events. It was, what President Huxman called, “a trifecta day.鈥 When Herm was asked about how the day was going, he gave an enthusiastic two thumbs up.

Each of the winning clubs received $100! International Students Organization (ISO) won Most Engaging/Best All-Around, Asian-Pacific Islander Student Alliance (APISA) won Most 91短视频 Love, and Queer Student Alliance (QSA) and Latino Student Alliance (LSA) split the winnings from the Best Theme category.

Lov91短视频 Giving Day came to a close with a biscuits and jam bar and live music from talented musicians in the Student Union. Litwiller said a highlight of her day came when time was nearing midnight in the Student Union with several students who stuck it out. 鈥淲hen we surpassed $340,000, cheers erupted, Tyler Goss started playing 鈥榃e Are the Champions鈥 over the speakers, and everyone sang along in celebration,鈥 Litwiller said. 鈥淚t was a beautiful moment to be a part of, and reminded me of why we do this work: To support these amazing students. I’m filled with gratitude today.鈥

Why they Lov91短视频: Akiel Baker 鈥21 says human connection feels central to 91短视频 /now/news/2024/why-they-lovemu-akiel-baker-21-says-human-connection-feels-central-to-emu/ Mon, 01 Apr 2024 14:00:00 +0000 /now/news/?p=56052 Editor鈥檚 Note: This profile is the fifth of six about students and alumni leading up to Lov91短视频 Giving Day on April 10. For more information about the day and to donate, visit .

91短视频 alumnus Akiel Baker 鈥21 says a turning point in his life came while on a cross-cultural trip to Guatemala during his junior year. Being in a country where he didn鈥檛 speak the language or understand the culture was a humbling experience for the Bowie, Maryland, native.聽

鈥淚 came back a new person,鈥 Baker said. 鈥淏efore that, I was always doing the bare minimum.鈥

When he returned to the U.S., his whole approach to college changed. The social work major became more engaged in his coursework and more involved in the 91短视频 campus community. He joined clubs such as the Black Student Alliance (BSA), the International Students Organization and the Student Government Association.

As vice president of BSA, Baker was instrumental in bringing the Black Lives Matter mural to life and shaping the creation of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Before graduating with a bachelor of social work degree, he served as senior class president for the Class of 2021 and earned 2021 Cords of Distinction honors.聽

鈥淚 can honestly say I鈥檝e not had a bad moment at 91短视频,鈥 he said. 鈥淓very moment has been enriching, and I鈥檝e enjoyed every bit of it.鈥

Just like 91短视频 provided the push he needed to reach his full potential, Baker is helping children reach theirs as a social worker for Harrisonburg City Public Schools. In his role, he connects elementary and middle school students and their families with resources in the schools and community that can help them perform at their very best. One day he鈥檚 helping a busy mom with a busted transmission find an organization willing to help her, while another he鈥檚 figuring out which special education services a child is eligible for.聽

鈥淚 love building that human connection and assuring parents they鈥檙e not just a number within Harrisonburg City Public Schools… that they鈥檙e actually cared for and that we want the best for them,鈥 Baker said.

That feeling he gives the families he works with is the same feeling he got when he visited 91短视频 for the first time. He said he had been accepted to both 91短视频 and James Madison University, but the latter felt too big and didn鈥檛 offer the same sense of community.聽

“Everyone here was super nice and welcoming,” Baker said. “I love human connection and that’s something that feels central to 91短视频.”

After graduating in 2021, Baker served as residence director at 91短视频 for two years and worked as a site coordinator for , a Harrisonburg-based nonprofit dedicated to closing the learning gap and empowering youth. He earned a master鈥檚 degree in social work from West Virginia University in 2023.

Baker said he participates in Lov91短视频 Giving Day to give back to the school that鈥檚 given so much to him.

鈥淚 want people to have the same enriching experiences I had,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 want to see 91短视频 grow and will continue giving back to keep it growing.鈥

Why they Lov91短视频: Julie Weaver 鈥24 says professors at 91短视频 ‘really care about you鈥 /now/news/2024/why-they-lovemu-julie-weaver-24-says-professors-at-emu-really-care-about-you/ Mon, 25 Mar 2024 14:00:00 +0000 /now/news/?p=55862 Editor鈥檚 Note: This profile is the fourth of six about students and alumni leading up to Lov91短视频 Giving Day on April 10. For more information about the day and to donate, visit .

Harrisonburg, Virginia, native Julie Weaver 鈥24 has Royal blue in her blood.

Her grandfather, Samuel O. Weaver, graduated from Eastern Mennonite College and led Eastern Mennonite High School as its principal for more than a decade. Her grandmother graduated from EMHS and attended EMC. Her parents are EMC alumni. When it was her turn to attend college, the EMHS grad wasn鈥檛 so sure she wanted to follow in their footsteps.

鈥淚 really liked 91短视频,鈥 Weaver said, 鈥渂ut I thought, 鈥楧o I want to go to a school on the same block I鈥檝e been on for the past four years?鈥欌

After visiting several colleges, including four trips to 91短视频, she had no doubt about it 鈥 she belonged here.

鈥淎t 91短视频, people took an interest in me. They wanted to get to know me,鈥 said Weaver, who recalled forging new friendships during an overnight visit, even while brushing her teeth. 鈥淎t other colleges I visited, the only one who talked to me was the person hosting me in the dorms.鈥

The senior biology major said 91短视频鈥檚 small class sizes allow for personalized support from faculty, which was helpful for her more demanding STEM courses.

鈥淭he professors really care about you,鈥 Weaver said. 鈥淚 had trouble understanding a concept and my professor spent 45 minutes with me after class explaining it in different ways on the whiteboard until I understood it.鈥

Another benefit of attending 91短视频 is the wealth of scholarships and financial aid available to students. Weaver is in the honors program and is the recipient of numerous awards, including the highly selective President鈥檚 Scholarship

鈥淚t pays for a hefty portion of my tuition, which has been a huge blessing,鈥 she said. “Having the support of scholarships means a lot when I’ll be going into tens of thousands of dollars, if not over $100,000 in debt for my doctorate.”

After graduating in May, she鈥檚 headed to Richmond where she鈥檒l be earning a doctorate in physical therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University. She鈥檚 heard the three-year program can be a grind, but is confident 91短视频 has prepared her well. The lessons learned in her advanced anatomy class and in the campus cadaver lab will prove especially invaluable for the seven straight weeks of anatomy class ahead of her this summer.

“It’s been a journey,” Weaver said. “One chapter is ending, but the next one is starting.”

Why they Lov91短视频: Forced to leave one home, Anne Cornelius 鈥26 found another at 91短视频 /now/news/2024/why-they-lovemu-forced-to-leave-one-home-anne-cornelius-26-found-another-at-emu/ Mon, 18 Mar 2024 13:58:00 +0000 /now/news/?p=55855 Editor鈥檚 Note: This profile is the third of six about students and alumni leading up to Lov91短视频 Giving Day on April 10. Three years ago and about 8,600 miles away in Yangon, Myanmar, Anne Cornelius 鈥26 boarded a plane and left the only home she had ever known.

Escaping the ravages of a civil war that tore apart her country, she and her family sought asylum in the U.S. A kind host family from Maryland welcomed them in, and Cornelius soon adjusted to life in America. She learned that a close friend from her home city, Rachelle Swe 鈥21, had just graduated from 91短视频 and was working there as an admissions counselor. Cornelius decided to pay her friend a visit and take a campus tour of 91短视频.

She never imagined attending a college, let alone one in America. Her family wasn鈥檛 exactly flush with cash, especially after uprooting their lives to settle in a new country.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of donors through the Yoder/Webb Scholarship, Cornelius could attend 91短视频 without paying a dollar in tuition. The four-year, full-tuition scholarship is 91短视频鈥檚 highest academic award offered to a select few honors students each year.

鈥淚鈥檓 really grateful for the scholarship,鈥 Cornelius said. 鈥淚t is the only way I could come to school at 91短视频.鈥

Her friend in admissions introduced her to other international and Burmese students. These days, Cornelius, a sophomore majoring in international business and business analytics, has plenty of friends and plenty going on.

She is vice president of marketing for the Student Government Association, a digital media ambassador for undergraduate admissions and is a community assistant for her residence hall. Cornelius also does her part in recruiting future Royals; she talks to students back in Myanmar and encourages them to apply to 91短视频.

She might have been forced to leave one home, but she found another at 91短视频.

鈥淚 love the community here,鈥 she said. 鈥淓veryone鈥檚 so caring. I love how quickly I was able to fit in.鈥

Garrett Nyce 鈥25 had his heart set on attending 91短视频. The Souderton, Pennsylvania, native was drawn to its small size and its focus on a 鈥渂usiness for the common good鈥 philosophy, which few if any other schools offered.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a triple bottom line of people, planet and profits,鈥 the business analytics and economics major said. 鈥淣ot how to make the most money, but how to create the best world for people.鈥

鈥淭hat was something I didn鈥檛 think I would find at a lot of other schools,鈥 he added.

But, as he applied to colleges, a small Christian university near his hometown offered him enough financial aid that 鈥渋t would鈥檝e cost almost nothing to go there.鈥 As a self-described economics nerd, Nyce couldn鈥檛 ignore the tempting offer. 鈥淚鈥檓 so business-minded, it was hard to make that decision,鈥 he said.

91短视频 sprung into action to make his decision easier. The school awarded him the Horace & Elizabeth Longacre Business Scholarship 鈥 designated for full-time business students with a priority toward Mennonite students from Pennsylvania 鈥 and the choice became clear: he would become an 91短视频 Royal.

It鈥檚 scholarships like the one Nyce received and the financial aid packages given to 100 percent of undergraduate 91短视频 students that empower them to pursue a quality college education without financial barriers.

Three years into his education at 91短视频, Nyce couldn鈥檛 imagine himself anywhere else. The junior wields a mighty bat on the Royals baseball team, serves as a Royal Ambassador and is on the Leadership Council.

Royale Parker 鈥26 hadn’t set foot on 91短视频鈥檚 campus before move-in day. In fact, the Southern California native hadn’t even heard of the school until her high school guidance counselor suggested it. The more she learned about 91短视频, the more she felt she belonged as a Royal. And, it wasn鈥檛 just her first name that felt like a perfect match.

While other schools she contacted seemed to ignore her, she said members of the 91短视频 undergrad admissions team were quick to answer her questions and welcome her with open arms.

鈥淚 was looking for a school where students felt valued,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 what I got from 91短视频.鈥

The moment she arrived on the Harrisonburg, Virginia, campus, she knew she had made the right call. She saw how colorful and vibrant the campus was and recognized that 91短视频 was where she was meant to be.

鈥淲hat sets 91短视频 apart is its people,鈥 she said.

Roughly one-and-a-half years after that first day on campus, Parker is thriving at 91短视频. As a business and psychology major with aspirations in entrepreneurship, she launched a successful eyelash extension venture in the fall, catering primarily to her fellow students. She also plays an integral role in 91短视频鈥檚 Black Student Alliance (BSA) as its secretary-treasurer.

Parker said receiving financial aid through the University Scholarship has helped her focus on her studies without worrying about employment. Grateful for 91短视频’s generosity, she acknowledged that it provided the most substantial aid package among all her prospective schools.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a really huge help,鈥 she said.
