Eastern Mennonite controlled the first 10 minutes against the Bison, but couldn’t score despite four shots. The Bison struck first, getting a rebounded stickback in the 13th minute to go up 1-0.

Then just four minutes before halftime, Cox picked up her second assist helping听听(Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock) scored the go-ahead goal, making it 2-1.

The Royals stepped up their defense in the second 35 minutes, allowing Bethany to take just four shots in the frame.听听(Lothian, Md./Southern) made one save on Bethany’s only shot on goal in the half, and it was enough to secure 91短视频’s first win.

The women had a 16-11 advantage in shots, including 12-7 on goal. They also had a 7-3 edge in corners. Daley finished with six saves. Derstine took five shots with four on goal, while Williams and听听(Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) each put three on target.

All of 91短视频鈥檚 ODAC-sponsored sports were represented on the All-Academic Team.听 Men鈥檚 volleyball competes in the Continental Volleyball Conference and is not eligible for the ODAC team.

The ODAC All-Academic Team eclipsed 1,000 student-athletes for the eighth consecutive year and set a new high-water mark for conference honorees for the fifth year in a row.听 With representatives from each of the 17 ODAC institutions (including Catholic University for football only and Greensboro College and Notre Dame of Maryland University for swimming only), 1,558 student-athletes earned recognition on the 2013-14 ODAC All-Academic Team.

Eligibility for the ODAC All-Academic Team is open to any student-athlete that competes in a conference-sponsored sport, regardless of academic class.听 He or she must achieve at least a 3.25 grade point average for the year to be considered for an ODAC All-Academic Award.

Sophomore (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) had a big hand in the victory, as she charted her first career hat trick. The midfielder scored the game’s first goal just 5:35 in, then added a second unassisted score in the 33rd minute.

The Royals earned a penalty corner just before the half and scored in stoppage time to lead 3-0 at the break.听 (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock) caged the goal with an assist from (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale).

In the 42nd minute, Derstine set up (Allensville, Pa./Belleville Mennonite). Then Brinkley picked up her second helper in the 50th minute, as Cox scored for her hat trick.

Virginia Wesleyan got their goals in the 57th and 64th minutes, but it was far too late to dig out of the hole.

(Matoaca, Va./Matoaca) made 10 saves between the pipes.听 (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) and (Media, Pa./Delaware County Christian) each notched a defensive save.

The Royals are now 4-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and are fifth heading into their regular season finale at first-place Lynchburg on Wednesday. The win pushes the women two full games ahead of Washington and Lee, which is sixth. Bridgewater is a half-game ahead of 91短视频 at 4-2, while Shenandoah is 5-2. Both teams hold tie-breakers over the women, meaning the Royals will likely be playing as the fifth seed in the ODAC Tournament, which starts next Saturday.

After playing well but losing all seven of their season-opening non-conference games, the Royals took on Washington and Lee Wednesday night in just their second home contest of 2013. Less than five minutes in, (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock) scored a goal to give the women a 1-0 advantage.

The Generals settled down and actually out-shot 91短视频 in the opening frame, but couldn’t dent the cage.听 Finally in the 60th minute W&L equalized to make it 1-1.

Each team had great chances to get ahead in the final 10 minutes of regulation, but missed opportunities and great saves sent the game into extra time.

Playing a man up after a Washington and Lee yellow card, the Royals struck. Derstine fired a shot after a penalty corner, and the Generals’ goalie made a great save. Knowing she couldn’t hold the ball without drawing a penalty, the goalie pushed the ball out, but Williams was right there for a point-blank shot into the corner.

Both teams had 14 shots in the game, but Eastern Mennonite was much more efficient, putting 12 shots on goal compared to seven for the W&L. (Matoaca, Va./Matoaca) made six saves in between the pipes.

Derstine and (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) each had four shots on goal.

The overtime win was 91短视频’s first OT game since a victory over Bridgewater in the ODAC Quarterfinals in 2011.

Now 1-7 on the season and 1-0 in ODAC play, the Royals step back out of the league to host St. Mary’s (Md.) on Saturday. Game time in Harrisonburg is 2 p.m.

presented the awards, which are based on academic achievement, athletic contribution, Christian commitment, leadership, campus involvement and service, as the culmination of the evening.

Richter, a major with a 3.64 GPA, was a four-year pitcher for the baseball team and plans to work in a sales or marketing position.听 He was consistently on the Old Dominion Athletic Conference All-Academic Team and 91短视频鈥檚 Dean鈥檚 List.听 Besides baseball, his campus life was filled with leadership on , 91短视频 Royals Society and the .听 He also volunteered at numerous places off campus.

鈥淵ou are not an athlete just when you鈥檙e in season 鈥� you鈥檙e an athlete year round,鈥� Richter explained in how he balanced his demanding schedule at 91短视频.听 鈥淏aseball provided me with the discipline I needed to enjoy a busy, but incredibly rewarding college career.鈥�

Young, a captain with the women鈥檚 basketball team, was also on the Dean鈥檚 List and ODAC All-Academic Team, holding a 3.71 GPA with a major in and minor in .听 She was a four-year member of Royals Society, helping with prospective students, as well as being a member of the .听 Young was also a youth leader at her church and volunteered with a local food bank and the fall back-to-school backpack drive.

鈥淏eing a student-athlete has taught me to be mentally and physically strong in seemingly impossible situations,鈥� said Young, who suffered a long-lasting shoulder injury her freshman season.听 鈥淕od used basketball as the framework that I could grow in my relationship with Him, share my talents with others, and now go on to pursue a career in physical therapy.鈥�

The Athletic Department staff also voted for Athlete of the Year winners.听 Mitchell Leap (Harrisonburg, VA/Eastern Mennonite) claimed the men鈥檚 honor with Bianca Ygarza (Conestoga, PA/Penn Manor) taking the women鈥檚.

Leap led the men鈥檚 soccer team in scoring for the fourth straight season, netting ten goals, which was also third-best in the conference.听 He had five game-winning goals and was named All-ODAC First Team.听 Leap graduates fourth in 91短视频 history with 35 career goals and fifth with 80 career points.听 Ygarza was a dynamic presence as a power forward for the basketball women, earning a spot on the All-ODAC First Team as a sophomore.听 She led 91短视频 with 14.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game and was second in the ODAC in field goal percentage and free throws.

Also at the banquet, Newcomer of the Year Awards were given to Jenessa Derstine (Harleysville, PA/Christopher Dock) in field hockey and Justin Rodriguez (Miramar, FL/Pace) in baseball.

Derstine, an attacker for the Lady Royals, led the team with 29 points this year.听 She scored ten goals and assisted on nine others.听 Her speed helped ignite 91短视频鈥檚 offense and landed her on the All-ODAC Third Team.听 Rodriguez batted .374 with 28 runs and team highs of four homeruns and 41 RBIs.听 His RBI total was third in the ODAC during the regular season and the third baseman was named All-ODAC Second Team.

As part of the dinner and banquet, four seniors gave short reflections on their time playing a sport at Eastern Mennonite: Valerie Landis (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) from field hockey, Justin King (Lititz, PA/Warwick) from baseball, Pete Nelson (Harrisonburg, VA/Christopher Dock) from track and cross country, and Brent Yoder (Sarasota, FL/Sarasota Christian) from soccer.

King uniquely talked about playing four years of a collegiate sport even though the experience was not living up to the ideas he had beforehand.

鈥淚 have learned a lesson I would have not chosen to learn on my own, because it was painful,鈥� said King.听 鈥淭hrough the ups and downs, the wins and losses, I have had to rely on God as my source of hope and strength when I was weak, discouraged, or overwhelmed.听 The Apostle Paul says it best in 2 Corinthians 12:8-9, 鈥楾hree times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.听 But he said to me, 鈥楳y grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.鈥欌�欌��

Landis was the lone senior on the field hockey team this fall and stepped into a leadership role which was not natural to her.听 She said that will help her as she leaves college.

鈥淚 recognize that I am going to be a new member of a completely different team after graduation,鈥� Landis explained. 听鈥淲hat I have learned over the past four years is that I can鈥檛 let my age or lack of experience hinder me from being responsible or taking initiative. 听God has granted each of us the experience of being part of a team and it is my hope that we are able to leave this community as an athlete and a graduate and apply those interpersonal skills learned on either the court or field and apply them in the next stage of life, appropriately and meaningfully.鈥�

Dr. Ronald Stoltzfus, Faculty Athletic Representative, and Dr. Nancy Heisey, Undergraduate Academic Dean, presented the Academic Achievement Awards to each team鈥檚 individual with the highest GPA.听 Those awards went to: Richter and Brad Billings (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) in baseball, Jennifer Blankenship (Bassett, VA/Bassett) in women鈥檚 basketball, Owen Longacre (Telford, PA/Christopher Dock) in men鈥檚 basketball, Nels Akerson (Harrisonburg, VA/Eastern Mennonite) in men鈥檚 cross country, Alli Eanes (Harrisonburg, VA/Westmont Hilltop) in women鈥檚 cross country and track, Jenna Longenecker (Lancaster, PA/Conestoga Valley) in field hockey, Bryce Shank (Harrisonburg, VA/Eastern Mennonite) in men鈥檚 soccer, Erica Detweiler (Hickory, NC/Fred T. Foard) in women鈥檚 soccer, Aaron Sloan (Ooltewah, TN/McCallie School) in men鈥檚 track, and Kendall Garber (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) in men鈥檚 volleyball.

The evening included a special mention of , a senior student worker with the athletic events staff, who had passed away from cancer just a week prior to the banquet.

Junior (Souderton, PA/Christopher Dock) earned an All-State award for the first time after being named All-ODAC First Team earlier this fall.听 She was a key cog in the midfield and finished third on the team with eight goals and dished out two assists.听 Santiago had three-game winning goals, including in overtime against Bridgewater in the ODAC Quarterfinals.

Attackers (Telford, PA/Souderton) and (Harleysville, PA/Christopher Dock) were also named to the All-State Second Team.

Bencsik led the Lady Royals with 11 goals and was tied for third in the ODAC during the regular season.听 She had four game-winning scores and was second for 91短视频 with 24 total points.

Derstine led Eastern Mennonite with 29 points in her freshman season.听 She had a team-high nine assists and was second with ten goals.听 The speedy Derstine was also fourth in the ODAC in points.

91短视频 ended the year at 10-11, falling to eventual champion Lynchburg in the ODAC Semifinals.

Lynchburg College swept the top awards with the release of the 2011 College Division Field Hockey All-State Team, as voted on by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). Junior Shelly Milks earned the Player of the Year Award, Katie Kline was the Rookie of the Year and Enza Steele was the Coach of the Year.

Milks, a first-team National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-American, was also named the All-South Region Player of the Year.听 Earlier this off-season, Milks was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Player of the Year for the second year in a row and was also the ODAC Scholar Athlete of the Year. She tallied 10 goals and added eight assists, while helping the LC defense allow just nine goals all season.

Kline, also the ODAC Rookie of the Year, burst onto the scene this year with 11 goals, nine assists and 31 points, placing third on the team in all three categories.

Steele, the 2011 ODAC Coach of the Year, takes home her second-straight All-State Coach of the Year Award after LC went 19-2. The Hornets ended its 2011 season ranked fourth in NCAA Division III and LC advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s Quarterfinal after earning the program’s sixth-straight ODAC crown.

Daryl Bert, vice president for finance, opened chapel by praising the tireless efforts of Bruce Emmerson, food services director for Pioneer Catering, which operates 52 kitchens nationwide.听 Emmerson, who was named Pioneer鈥檚 “rookie of the year,” in 2007 and “director of the year,” in 2011, has continuously improved the quality of services that are offered to the students, faculty, staff and visitors of 91短视频, said Bert.

“I have appreciated how seriously Bruce takes feedback from our community by personally, wittily and publicly responding to feedback cards in the cafeteria,” said Bert. “I am always amazed at how quickly Bruce implements themes from the survey forms into the food service experience in the cafeteria…

鈥淚 believe this attention to quality is validated by the large number of faculty and staff that join students in the cafeteria for lunch on a daily basis.”

Byron Peachey, associate campus pastor, said: “Anytime I’ve needed to work with Bruce or Ramona [Lantz] with special catering needs or events, they are adaptable and easy to work with, willing to take on special events such as the Late Night Breakfast鈥� The food is always consistently delicious and varied.”

91短视频 routinely hosts outside groups, conferences and youth camps over the summer which adds to Emmerson’s schedule. LeDayne McLeese Polaski, program coordinator for the Baptist Peace Fellowship also praised the work of Emmerson and Matthew Hunsberger, Lehman Auditorium facility technician, in a written statement to Bert.

After stating that her Fellowship puts 91短视频 at the top of the list, Polaski added: “I would be remiss if I did not mention the excellent work of Matt Hunsberger and Bruce Emmerson… They are true professionals who go above and beyond the call of duty to provide excellent service.”

The Lady Royals controlled the first 35 minutes and took an early lead on their home field just 11:11 in.听 The speedy Derstine dribbled to the goal line and centered a pass which Santiago sent home to put 91短视频 up 1-0.

The women nearly added a second goal late in the half, but (Telford, PA/Souderton) had a shot from a corner come out off the post, and a minute later she flipped a backside one-timer just wide.

Bridgewater regrouped and earned a corner as time expired in the half.听 Joan Burleson drilled the long shot off the corner to tie the game at 1-1 at the break.

Santiago helped the women take the lead back just 2:44 into the second as she dribbled up the right side and sent a cross to a wide open (Allensville, PA/Belleville Mennonite) for an easy goal.听 But the Eagles had a quick answer, getting a score from Jennifer Bateman less than two minutes later to tie it up again.

The Lady Royals continued to have an advantage on the field, but the game stayed precariously tied.

Bridgewater nearly broke through, but (Matoaca, VA/Matoaca) made a great save on a breakaway with nine minutes left. On the resulting corner, 91短视频 dodged another bullet when a shot from outside of the circle hit the cage, but no one touched it along the way.

The women earned a handful of corners in the final minutes, but couldn’t make one stick and the game went into seven-on-seven extra time.

Overtime was full of excitement as both goalies made great saves.听 Bencsik hit another shot of the post before Derstine found Santiago for the game winner, giving 91短视频 its second consecutive ODAC Quarterfinal win over the Eagles.听 The women beat BC 2-1 in the same round last fall.

Also like last year, the Lady Royals (10-10)听advance to the semifinals to take on top-seeded Lynchburg on Wednesday.听 The Hornets, ranked No. 3 in the Kookaburra/NFHCA national poll, have won five straight ODAC titles.

The Lady Royals had a 25-12 edge in shots, including 6-3 in the overtime period.听 Danaher finished with five saves.
