What is your major?Ìý What do you hope to do?

Elementary Education.Ìý I hope to teach second or third grade.

What originally made you choose to come to 91¶ÌÊÓƵ?

I choose 91¶ÌÊÓƵ because I was able to play volleyball and participate in other things like choir.Ìý I also like the small Christian campus.Ìý I heard about 91¶ÌÊÓƵ through Mennonite Convention and when I came out for a visit I really loved the feel of campus. ÌýIt felt like home away from home.Ìý I also wanted to experience a new part of the United States and meet new people, and I was really excited to be on a cross cultural (Guatemala and Mexico in spring 2012).

What has it been like playing women’s volleyball here?

It’s been an amazing experience.Ìý Every year the team becomes like a family, and apart from that being able to play volleyball at the college level has been amazing, too.Ìý Just being challenged at a higher level of play has been fun.

What has it been like being both a student and an athlete while at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ?

Balancing everything is a challenge at times, but the coaches and professors are very flexible and willing to work with us.ÌýÌý I also enjoy staying busy with lots of different things so it’s not a problem.Ìý I’m also in Chamber Singers, celebration (Sunday night campus worship) and work study.Ìý Music is a big part of my life and that’s another reason why I choose to come to 91¶ÌÊÓƵ.Ìý The choir director was flexible, allowing me to participate in choir and still in sports.Ìý Being in involved in celebration and Bible studies has been good, too, giving me more opportunities to grow in my faith.

In your three years, you have had three different coaches.Ìý How has that affected your experience?

Having three different coaches helped me perfect different skills because different coaches have different perspectives on what they want me to improve upon.Ìý I’m always trying to improve my skills anyway, but you have to keep an open mind and be ready for anything when you don’t know what kind of coach you’re going to get.

What are one or two things you have learned from playing volleyball here that you will take with you when you leave?

I’ve learned that leadership on a team can come from more than one person.Ìý Supporting your teammates and being close to them off the court is important as well – you have to feel comfortable with each other so that you play well together on the court.

Going into the match with the Chargers, the women had lost four straight contests in which they had won at least one game.Ìý The Lady Royals used an 11-2 run midway through game one to take control, winning 25-20 on a kill from (Richmond, VA/Maggie L. Wagner).

91¶ÌÊÓƵ trailed 15-9 in game two, before good serving turned things around.Ìý With a 16-5 finish, the women won again, 25-20.

The Chargers led by as many as seven early in game three, before a 7-0 run put 91¶ÌÊÓƵ back in front.Ìý The Lady Royals surged to a 22-20 lead, but Lancaster Bible scored four in a row to take over and steal a 25-23 decision.

The teams traded leads in game four before a 3-0 surge gave Eastern Mennonite a 20-16 cushion.Ìý LBC got within one point twice, but a (Harrisonburg, VA/Turner Ashby) kill ended the day by a 25-23 score.

Ritchie finished with 30 kills to roll over her career best.Ìý She also had 12 digs and three of 91¶ÌÊÓƵ’s 13 service aces.Ìý (Parkesburg, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) and (Stuarts Draft, VA/Grace Christian) each landed nine kills while Smeltzer had eight.Ìý (New Paris, IN/Bethany Christian) tallied a career high 52 assists, averaging 13 per game.

(San Antonio, TX/Brandeis) had three aces along with 18 digs.Ìý (Goessel, KS/Goessel) had a team high 21 digs.

Eastern Mennonite hit a season-best .230 as a team.

The win pushes the women to 4-14 on the year.Ìý They return to conference play for their next three matches, starting with a home date against Roanoke on Tuesday.Ìý Game time from Yoder Arena is 6:30pm.

Each of 91¶ÌÊÓƵ’s sports was represented on the ODAC All-Academic Team except for men’s volleyball, which competes in the Continental Volleyball Conference.Ìý The CVC will also release an all-academic team later this summer.
