The 33-member group, conducted by James W. (Jim) Warner, will open the program with “A Song of Praise,” arranged by James D. Ployar and based on the hymn, “This is My Father’s World.”

The ensemble will also perform “Towards a New Horizon,” by Steven Reineke, an overture commissioned by the city of Shoreview, Minn., to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its founding.

Also on the program will be an “American Hymnsong Suite” by David Milburn and “A Longford Legend,” written in 1996 by Robert Sheldon and based on the composers impressions of three poems found in a collection of 18th century Irish street ballades.

The concert will conclude with “The Turtle’s Retort,” by Frank Bridge (1879-1941) and arranged by Mark Fonder. Written in 1919, it is a classic example of a proper British dance-hall-style period piece.

Ensemble members are equally divided between 91短视频 students and the local community.

Warner taught in public schools for 34 years in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia, with most of this time as director of bands at Harrisonburg High School. He retired from HHS in July, 2005.

Brazilian music and culture will come center stage in two concerts presented by music department faculty and students at 91短视频.

Pianist and professor Paulo Steinberg will discuss the relation between cultural elements and music of Brazil and play pieces by two Brazilian composers 7:30 p.m. Friday, Apr. 13 in Martin Chapel of the seminary building at 91短视频.

Dr. Steinberg, a native of San Paulo, Brazil, will discuss the composing techniques of composers Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) and Ernesto Nazareth (1863-1934) and play selections by both Brazilian composers. The selections range from a tango to a fusion of Bach and Brazilian elements to a cycle of native characters and landscapes.

Program Features Many

Also in Martin Chapel, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 14, students of music instructors Monica Carlson, John Fast, Joan Griffing and Paulo Steinberg will perform several styles of Brazilian music written for piano solo and piano and violin.

The program will also feature music for guitar, played by Matt Carlson, and jazz ensemble, featuring Jim Warner and Nate Bontrager.

The 23-member group, conducted by James W. (Jim) Warner, will open the program with “Allerseelen (All Souls’ Day),” an art song by Richard Strauss, arranged by Albert Oliver Davis.

The ensemble will also perform “Amparito Roca” by Jaime Texidor Dalmau, a composer and conductor who lived most of his life in northern Spain. This piece is dedicated to a girl named Amparito (the diminutive of Amparo) Roca.

Also on the program will be “Cajun Folk Songs II” by Frank Ticheli and “Scootin’ on Hardrock (Three Short Scat-Jazzy Dances),” a musical homage by David Holsinger to Hardrock Road, the former Main Street of a once thriving community close to the railroad line between Dallas and Ft. Worth, Tex.

“One doesn’t mosey down Hardrock Road anymore,” the composer notes. “The only reason to drive there now is to go from somewhere you’ve been to someplace you haven’t. But once upon a time, Hardrock Road was the center of town.”

The concert will conclude with an arrangement of “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” a “Salute to Glenn Miller” and “Hymn for a Child (Jesus Loves Me).”

Two local jazz ensembles will join musical forces for a concert 7:30 p.m. Friday, Mar. 30, in Lehman Auditorium.

The “91短视频 Jazz” and “Just Jazzin’,” a community-based big band group, will feature favorite standards from the Glen Miller, Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra libraries along with contemporary arrangers such as Doug Beach, Tom Kubis and Mike Tomaro.

Jennifer Cooper of the 91短视频 music faculty, featured vocalist with 91短视频 Jazz, will perform “The Man I Love,” “My Funny Valentine” and “Till You Come Back To Me”; and Charles Barone, featured vocalist with Just Jazzin’, will perform a collage of Sinatra arrangements – “Come Fly With Me”, “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head” and “My Way.”

Jim Warner will direct 91短视频 Jazz, and Tom McKenzie is director and solo trombonist of Just Jazzin’.

The 32-member group, conducted by James W. (Jim) Warner, will perform “Brook Green Suite,” a 1933 composition by Gustav Holst that includes the use of a folk melody. The suite exhibits Holst’s melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and stylistic maturity at their highest level.

The ensemble will also perform “The Gathering of the Ranks at Hebron” by David R. Holsinger, based on a story of King David in I Chronicles 12:23-28; and “To a Wild Rose,” by American composter Edward MacDowell (1860-1908).

Also on the program will be “In the Temple of Zion,” a contemporary work by Steven Reineke inspired by a visit to Zion National Park in Utah; “When the Morning Stars Sang” by James Curnow, inspired by the biblical story of Job; and “As All the Heavens Were a Bell” by Jay Bocook, a tribute to the firefighters of New York city for their heroic efforts surrounding Sept. 11, 2001; and “Lead On, O King Eternal,” a setting by James Swearingen.

The 21-member student choir, directed by Janet M. Hostetter, will perform Vivaldi’s "Gloria," accompanied by the 91短视频 string quartet; John Fast, organist; April Miller, oboist; Jim Warner, trumpeter; and soloists Rebeca Barge, Kirsten Getz and Sylvia Hooley.

The program will conclude with several smaller octavos, including "Hope for Resolution," a piece featuring both children and adult choirs, flute, piano, saxophone and djembe.

Hostetter is an alumna of 91短视频 and James Madison University where she completed a BA in music education and her MM in choral conducting. Hostetter is also director of music at Harrisonburg Mennonite Church and an elementary music educator in Rockingham County.
