For professionals already in business or leadership roles, the graduate certificate is an intermediate step between a bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degree in the field. The coursework can be applied towards an or an .

Graduate Certificate in Business Administration

The 15-unit , which can be completed in less than a year, provides foundational skills and tools necessary to lead effectively in business, public agencies or nonprofit entities.

鈥淥rganizational leaders have both an opportunity and a responsibility to facilitate a turn toward solving many of the complex problems we encounter in the world today,鈥 says . 鈥淭his certificate offers leaders the foundational knowledge and contemporary data to recognize the need for change, and the philosophy and tools to lead a stakeholder-inspired process toward more sustainable and just outcomes.鈥

Required courses address such topics as business ethics and policy, organizational behavior, and finance and accounting. Students are allowed a maximum of two elective courses, one of which can substitute for a course on comparative perspectives on business and society. Electives from the MBA program of study are offered in technology, information and data analysis; marketing management; human resources; entrepreneurship; and project management and grant writing.

Graduate Certificate in Organizational Leadership

The can be completed in 18 months. The 17-unit program focuses on developing and broadening leadership skills through the study of organizational behavior and change, teambuilding, mentoring, and conflict transformation techniques. Students are encouraged to reflect on current and past practices, through readings, writings, and the completion of individual and team projects.

Students interested in this program may already have an MBA or other business skills, but desire to improve their management and leadership abilities.

鈥淢ost managers in organizations have learned how to manage people, money, and programs. What they usually lack, however, are the skills to lead sustainable change in their departments or organizations,鈥 said professor , a specialist in organizational leadership who has trained or consulted with over 100 organizations, including in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe. 鈥淭his certificate equips participants to both understand the systems they lead and the tools to effectively lead and change them.鈥

Coursework includes 鈥淟eadership and Management for the Common Good,鈥 which highlights ecological, social, and economic stressors of organizations at local and global levels, and approaches to leading people, systems, and organizations in positive ways. Other classes focus on organizational behavior; leadership theory and style; effecting and leading change within organizations; and developing healthy organizations through team building and collaboration. A 2-unit mentorship program is also required.

The first to fill this new position, Jensen will focus on organizational leadership and program development beginning July 1, 2015. She is currently associate dean for academic affairs at Bethel Seminary, associated with Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota.

鈥淚 am honored to be chosen for this position,鈥 Jensen says. 鈥91短视频 is a gem of a university with a wonderful history and legacy that is firmly rooted in its Anabaptist Mennonite commitments and which provides a strong foundation for moving forward into its second century. The Lancaster site already contributes greatly to the influence and visibility of 91短视频. I鈥檓 looking forward to expanding on that.鈥

Creation of the associate provost鈥檚 position was recommended by a five-member task force formed in the fall of 2013 to research new administrative structures for the growing site and its programs. The task force included two representatives of the Harrisonburg and Lancaster administrative staff, and three additional members appointed by each of the academic programs in Lancaster. , professor of organizational studies at 91短视频鈥檚 , served as a non-voting facilitator.

She will oversee the office and physical plant, technology, human resources and finances at the site, located in the Greenfield Corporate Center, off U.S. Route 30 in Lancaster.

鈥淎ny of the thousands of students who have taken a class through 91短视频 Lancaster will remember Julie鈥檚 significant behind-the-scenes work,鈥 Kniss said.

In her present position at Bethel Seminary since 2013, Jensen has been responsible for a wide variety of administrative tasks associated with the seminary鈥檚 St. Paul and San Diego, California, campuses, and distance learning programs, including academic affairs, faculty hiring and supervision, curriculum alignment, assessment and improvement, and budget planning.

鈥淗er experience and expertise in grant writing and program development, as well as in managing organizational relationships at a distance will serve 91短视频 at Lancaster well,鈥 said Kniss.

At Lancaster, Jensen will provide strategic leadership and enhance collaborative support processes for programming; pursue growth opportunities by growing enrollment in current programs and developing new programs to serve regional needs; and strengthen the communication and supportive relationships between 91短视频 Lancaster and the main campus in Harrisonburg.

Jenson in higher education since ’90

Jensen earned an EdD in organization learning and development from the University of St. Thomas in 2010. She entered higher education in 1990, working at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, as a coordinator of residence life. She then entered their master鈥檚 in counseling education program, working as a therapist in the university鈥檚 counseling center while earning her degree.

In 1997, she moved to Minnesota to become associate dean for relationship education at Bethel University. From 2000 to 2013, she was the program director for marriage and family therapy at Bethel Seminary.

In 2007, Jensen was a visiting professor at the Kiev Mohyla Business School, Kiev, Ukraine, which offers MBA and master’s programs in leadership, banking and finance, as well as corporate training. As a consultant, she also conducted a needs assessment and provided recommendations which resulted in the establishment of a grant development department at the school.

Jensen has considerable teaching experience in psychology, psychotherapy, and spiritual formation, as well as several years of academic consulting in non-profit, K-12, and higher education on the topics of leadership coaching, faith-work integration, organizational change, and cultural competency.

She has conducted more than 40 invited presentations in academic, professional, community, and church settings on range of topics including leadership, intercultural competency, relationships, parenting, communication, sexuality, work-life effectiveness, and formation.

A native of Minnesota, Jensen earned her bachelor鈥檚 degree in music education at Northwestern College in 1984 and taught for four years at Waukegan Christian School in Zion, Illinois.

91短视频 will again team up with the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce and the Shenandoah Valley Small Business Development Center to offer six "Seminars in Organizational Leadership" aimed at helping persons sharpen their leadership in a rapidly-changing environment. Topics will range from "Leading Healthy Organizations" to "Planning and Leading Group Decision-Making in the Midst of Conflict and Change."

Harrisonburg Community Mediation Center is joining as a sponsor for 2009.

Instructors are seasoned faculty members from 91短视频’s Center for Justice and Peacebuilding (CJP), the Masters in Business Administration (MBA) program, the Adult Degree Completion Program (ADCP), the Community Mediation Center, and other community business leaders.

"91短视频 is pleased to again work closely with the Chamber of Commerce to add the element of the ‘people-side’ of business to the existing and excellent array of business services in our community," said Susan Landes Beck, a CJP administrator and initiator of the series. "With these joint efforts, the Valley has a practical package of training opportunities for local persons who want to grow in all areas of their leadership, business, entrepreneurship and management skills," she added.

"Ninety-five persons from across the Shenandoah Valley and as far away as Pennsylvania and North Carolina attended the initial seminar series held between January and April this year," Beck noted. "The seminars were so in demand that afternoon sessions had to be scheduled to accommodate registrations. We’ve had regular phone calls since April from persons wanting to register for the 2009 series."

The seminars will begin January 23, 2009, meeting 9 a.m. for noon on seven Fridays in classroom 211/212 of the University Commons.

The cost is $79 per seminar or $399 for the entire series, with a 10 percent discount for Chamber members.

"I found this series to be exceptional in organization, materials and up-to- date applications for today’s work environment," said Sallye Trobaugh, broker with ERA Kline May Realty. "The professional interactions brought a renewal of existing friendships and launched new ones as well."
