The ODAC All-Academic Team eclipsed 1,000 student-athletes for the eighth consecutive year and set a new high-water mark for conference honorees for the fifth year in a row.Ìý With representatives from each of the 17 ODAC institutions (including Catholic University for football only and Greensboro College and Notre Dame of Maryland University for swimming only), 1,558 student-athletes earned recognition on the 2013-14 ODAC All-Academic Team.

Eligibility for the ODAC All-Academic Team is open to any student-athlete that competes in a conference-sponsored sport, regardless of academic class.Ìý He or she must achieve at least a 3.25 grade point average for the year to be considered for an ODAC All-Academic Award.

Foard), Sr., Women’s Soccer – Defender, Environmental Sustainability, 3.95 GPA.Ìý Detweiler helped solidify the back row on the soccer team, starting all 19 games for a team which posted five shutouts.Ìý She scored one goal and added two assists.Ìý Detweiler also was named CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District and earned 91¶ÌÊÓƵ’s President Award, which is the highest honor an 91¶ÌÊÓƵ student-athlete can receive.

Ìý(Elkton, Va./Spotswood), Sr., Softball – Shortstop, Nursing, 3.63 GPA.Ìý Hensley was a four-year starter at shortstop for the Royals, very effectively balancing an All-ODAC and All-Region career on the field with 91¶ÌÊÓƵ’s tough nursing major in the classroom.Ìý She batted .306 this year 21 RBIs and a team-best 25 runs.Ìý Hensley graduates with 91¶ÌÊÓƵ records for career hits (186), career singles (129) and career assists (367).

Ìý(Parkesburg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite), Sr., Women’s Volleyball – Middle Hitter, Nursing, 3.81 GPA.Ìý Kennel also successfully balanced the demands of a sport and the nursing major.Ìý On the court, she led the Royals in a resurgent year with 217 kills.Ìý Kennel was second on the team with 2.19 kills and 0.52 blocks per set.

Ìý(Sterling, Ill./Sterling), Jr., Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field, Congregational Ministry, 3.91 GPA.Ìý Transferring in from Hesston College this year, Landis had a slow start in the fall recovering from an injury, but was hitting his stride by the end of cross country season.Ìý He grabbed All-Region status by running a PR of 26:17.69 at the regional meet, and then broke a program record in the track season.Ìý At the ODAC indoor meet, Landis set 91¶ÌÊÓƵ’s record in the 5000m, crossing in 15:41.94.Ìý He is also second in the outdoor 5000m (15:25.08) and third in the indoor 3000m (9:06.57).

Ìý(Mt. Pleasant, Pa./Mt. Pleasant Area), Sr., Women’s Cross Country/Track & Field, Liberal Arts, 3.93 GPA.Ìý Rittenhouse was part of the distance medley relay team which broke an 91¶ÌÊÓƵ record and won gold at the ODAC Championships with a time of 13:17.17.Ìý She also landed at No. 8 in the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ history books in outdoor 5000m (19:29.20) and No. 9 in the indoor mile (5:47.15).

Ìý(Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite), Jr., Men’s Soccer – Keeper, Accounting/Economics, 3.95 GPA.Ìý Completing his second season as 91¶ÌÊÓƵ’s starting keeper, Yoder made 78 saves in 17 games.Ìý He twice tied his career high with 10 stops in a game and was named to the All-Cialella Classic Team for his play at a tourney the second weekend of the season.

To earn VaSID Academic All-State honors, a student-athlete must have achieved at least a 3.25 grade point average and be at least a sophomore.Ìý Each school in the state is allowed six nominees.

VaSID is comprised of sports information or athletics communications professionals from intercollegiate institutions throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Membership is open to any individual affiliated with one of the state’s institutions at the NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, USCAA and community college levels, provided that individual’s area of responsibility lies within the realm of sports information.

Game one was close until 91¶ÌÊÓƵ broke loose and closed on a 17-9 run to win 25-19. Eastern Mennonite surged to a 14-2 lead in game two and never slowed down, winning 25-12. The Chargers regrouped by the third game and kept the score close. But the Royals closed strong again, using an 8-2 run to win 25-18.

Just miles from her hometown, senior (Parkesburg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) played an incredible game. She had match highs with her 12 kills, .522 attack percentage and 18 digs. Kennel also had a service ace, solo block and block assist. Middle hitter (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) was almost as efficient, knocking down eight kills on just 17 attempts and adding a couple of blocks.

(Willow Street, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite), also playing near her hometown, added nine kills.Ìý Setter (Cheverly, Md./Elizabeth Seton) notched a double double with 31 assists and 11 digs to go with three aces.

After playing four matches in five days, the Royals get the week off before another road trip next weekend. They play at North Carolina Wesleyan on Friday, followed by a tri-match hosted by Guilford on Saturday.

Howard Payne 3, 91¶ÌÊÓƵ 2
The women had a great start to the day, closing on a 12-4 run to take game one by a score of 25-19. Howard Payne skipped ahead with quick wins of 25-17 and 25-11, putting 91¶ÌÊÓƵ against the wall.

The Yellow Jackets held a slight lead for much of game four before a 3-0 burst put Eastern Mennonite up 24-23.Ìý Each team missed a chance to end it before a pair of HPU errors allowed the Royals to force game five, 28-26.

A 5-0 run looked to have 91¶ÌÊÓƵ in the driver’s seat in the decider, leading 9-6. But the momentum quickly turned to the Yellow Jackets, as they scored six straight to go ahead 14-9. The Royals managed two points before HPU closed it out, 15-11.

Freshman (Port Republic, Va./Eastern Mennonite) led all players with 17 kills and added 11 digs and four blocks. Libero (San Antonio, Tex./Brandeis) was just as key with a whopping 31 digs. (Parkesburg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) was good for 11 kills and four blocks. Miller and Kennel each had a pair of service aces.

91¶ÌÊÓƵ 3, Salem 1
After a short 30-minute break, the Royals returned to the floor to take on Salem, which went to the NCAA Tournament last fall. The Spirits came out on all cylinders and grabbed a 25-17 win in game one.

The women fell behind again in game two, before a 7-0 run changed the momentum of the day. Eastern Mennonite closed on a 21-11 run to win game two, 25-19. An 11-2 surge gave the Royals game three by the same score. The Spirits were done by the fourth game, which 91¶ÌÊÓƵ took 25-16.

(Willow Street, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) got her first extended playing time of the weekend and responded with a match high 13 kills. Kennel and (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) each added 10 kills and four block assists.

(Cheverly, Md./Elizabeth Seton) had 28 set assists and three service aces.Ìý ophomore (Elkhart, Ind./Bethany Christian) was one of four Royals with double digit digs, as she scooped up 22 Spirit spikes.

As a team, 91¶ÌÊÓƵ had season bests in hitting percentage, digs and total blocks.

Sophomore Katie Miller was named to the All-91¶ÌÊÓƵ Invitational Team for her efforts over the two day event. 91¶ÌÊÓƵ’s libero averaged 4.81 digs per set, including 31 against Howard Payne, and added a team high seven service aces.

The Royals, now 2-2, stay at home for their next match, taking on Mary Baldwin Thursday in Yoder Arena.

Going into the match with the Chargers, the women had lost four straight contests in which they had won at least one game.Ìý The Lady Royals used an 11-2 run midway through game one to take control, winning 25-20 on a kill from (Richmond, VA/Maggie L. Wagner).

91¶ÌÊÓƵ trailed 15-9 in game two, before good serving turned things around.Ìý With a 16-5 finish, the women won again, 25-20.

The Chargers led by as many as seven early in game three, before a 7-0 run put 91¶ÌÊÓƵ back in front.Ìý The Lady Royals surged to a 22-20 lead, but Lancaster Bible scored four in a row to take over and steal a 25-23 decision.

The teams traded leads in game four before a 3-0 surge gave Eastern Mennonite a 20-16 cushion.Ìý LBC got within one point twice, but a (Harrisonburg, VA/Turner Ashby) kill ended the day by a 25-23 score.

Ritchie finished with 30 kills to roll over her career best.Ìý She also had 12 digs and three of 91¶ÌÊÓƵ’s 13 service aces.Ìý (Parkesburg, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) and (Stuarts Draft, VA/Grace Christian) each landed nine kills while Smeltzer had eight.Ìý (New Paris, IN/Bethany Christian) tallied a career high 52 assists, averaging 13 per game.

(San Antonio, TX/Brandeis) had three aces along with 18 digs.Ìý (Goessel, KS/Goessel) had a team high 21 digs.

Eastern Mennonite hit a season-best .230 as a team.

The win pushes the women to 4-14 on the year.Ìý They return to conference play for their next three matches, starting with a home date against Roanoke on Tuesday.Ìý Game time from Yoder Arena is 6:30pm.

Each of 91¶ÌÊÓƵ’s sports was represented on the ODAC All-Academic Team except for men’s volleyball, which competes in the Continental Volleyball Conference.Ìý The CVC will also release an all-academic team later this summer.
