Miller Hall of Nations,\u201d dedicated during a chapel service at the University Commons at 91短视频 (91短视频) on April 8, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Among the countries represented are those where 91短视频 has sent cross-cultural groups; where\u00a0alumni, faculty, and staff live; and where students come from.<\/p>\n<p>The concept of the hall was developed by Lee M. Yoder, chair of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/acrs\/\">The Anabaptist Center for Religion and Society<\/a> and a former vice president and professor of education at 91短视频 from 1975-1986.<\/p>\n<p>The hall \u201cgives visibility to the global context in which we teach and work,\u201d Yoder said during opening ceremonies. \u201cThese national flags serve to welcome those learners who come to this campus to study and to enrich our lives. Miller Hall of Nations.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The hall is named after <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2015\/05\/new-orie-o-miller-biography-celebrated-by-contemporaries-at-anabaptist-center-for-religion-and-society-meeting\/\">Orie O. Miller<\/a>, a Mennonite leader in the United States who led missions to other nations and was instrumental in the formation of many Mennonite institutions, including Mennonite Central Committee, that led Mennonites to serve in a global context.<\/p>\n<p>Miller was also an important influence in Mennonite education. \u201cPrograms such as 91短视频\u2019s cross cultural seminars, services for international students, visiting scholars programs, mission and service trips, as well as many graduate\u00a0programs, including the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding were directly influenced through the work of Orie Miller through Mennonite Central Committee and Eastern Mennonite Missions,\u201d said Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/rhodesg\">Gloria Rhodes<\/a>, chair of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/applied-social-sciences\/\">Department of Applied Social Sciences<\/a>, who provided the welcome for the service.<\/p>\n<p>After opening words from Yoder, Edgar Stoesz shared memories of working with Miller. A Minnesota native, Stoesz worked more than 30 years with Mennonite Central Committee in Akron, Pennsylvania, in various leadership capacities.<\/p>\n<p>Several students shared their thoughts on what the hall means for the university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think 91短视频 is very globally minded,\u201d said sophomore Hannah Shultz. \u201cThis would be another representation of that, that\u2019s very visible, very clear, right as a prospective student comes in. I think it will also bring life to the place, to have all that color and the flags.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First-year Sebastian Rivas, a student from Colombia, felt similarly. \u201cRight now this is very important to see, at least to remember, who we are,\u201d explained Rivas. He said, \u201cWe as children of God and as Mennonites need to be together despite the borders, despite the conflicts that we\u2019re seeing right now, because right now is the moment that we most need love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Faculty, staff, students, and the broader community have been invited to sponsor a flag of their choice for $90. The goal is to reach 100 flags. Those interested in sponsoring a flag can click <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/applied-social-sciences\/OMC-mini-grants\/orie-o-miller-hall-of-nations\/\">here for an online form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The inauguration of the hall was a part of the 91短视频 leadership conference, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/02\/emu-leadership-conference-to-create-a-new-paradigm-of-leading-into-the-common-good\/\">Leading into the Common Good: An Anabaptist Perspective<\/a>,\u201d which brought several hundred particpants to campus over a three-day period to hear speakers such as Brian Welch, founder of Mother Earth News, and organizational leadership innovator Peter Block.<\/p>\n<p><em>Portions of this article were reprinted from the April 1, 2016, issue of The Weather Vane.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The flags of 55 countries now hang in \u201cThe Orie O.
