{"id":28458,"date":"2016-06-13T10:04:51","date_gmt":"2016-06-13T14:04:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=28458"},"modified":"2016-08-09T13:52:11","modified_gmt":"2016-08-09T17:52:11","slug":"emu-set-to-prepare-engineers-with-a-heart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/emu-set-to-prepare-engineers-with-a-heart\/","title":{"rendered":"91短视频 set to prepare engineers &#8216;with a heart&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Overseeing construction of a footbridge connecting a rural Latin American village to the wider world,<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"> <\/a>deepening our collective human understanding of bubble science,<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"> <\/a>or helping design a new and improved airplane wing<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\"> <\/a>are admirable creative and scientific feats that might appear on an engineer\u2019s CV.<\/p>\n<p>And soon, for the first time ever, CVs like these might include graduation from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/math\/engineering\/\">four-year engineering program<\/a> at 91短视频 (91短视频).<\/p>\n<p>For more than 20 years, 91短视频 has offered a pre-engineering program, allowing students to begin coursework toward an engineering degree but requiring them to transfer to another school after several semesters. In the fall of 2016, however, a full engineering undergraduate major will be offered.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-\u201dcenter\u201d\">\u00a0 \u201cEngineering schools can spit out good technicians, but what we really also need is technicians who have some heart&#8230;&#8221; \u2014Johann Zimmermann, engineer<\/aside>\n<p>Prospective students have, for many years, expressed interest in a full engineering program. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/smeltzed?ssi=math\">Deirdre Smeltzer<\/a>, a professor in the mathematical sciences department before becoming undergraduate dean in 2013, said offering a full major had also long been discussed at the university but hadn\u2019t seemed feasible.<\/p>\n<p>That began to change after professors <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/jzt2844?ssi=math\">Esther Tian<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/dak2227?ssi=math\">Daniel King<\/a> \u2013 both with PhDs in mechanical engineering \u2013 joined the mathematical sciences department in 2013. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/easternmennoniteuniversity\/sets\/72157661581375069\">Recent<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/campaign\/\">upcoming<\/a> renovations to the Suter Science Center also allow for enough laboratory and classroom space to host a full-fledged engineering program.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28463\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28463\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/06\/emu-expands-engineering-program-to-offer-bachelors-degree-in-mechanical-or-computer-engineering\/engineering-pictures-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-28463\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28463 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/06\/Engineering-Pictures-1-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"Engineering Pictures-1\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/06\/Engineering-Pictures-1-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/06\/Engineering-Pictures-1.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Daniel King works with a student in the engineering lab.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThat created the opportunity for us to think, \u2018maybe we could really do this,\u2019\u201d said Smeltzer.<\/p>\n<p>Serious planning, including visits to other small universities with engineering programs and the creation of an advisory committee, began about a year ago.<\/p>\n<h3>Seven students already enrolled<\/h3>\n<p>The new program will offer a general engineering degree with options to focus on mechanical or computer engineering. As the major grows, Smeltzer said, future emphases might include environmental and biomedical engineering, building on 91短视频\u2019s existing undergraduate and graduate programs in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/applied-social-sciences\/environmental-sustainability\/\">environmental science<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/ma-biomed\/\">biomedicine<\/a>. The university will likely hire new faculty members in computer science and computer engineering in the near future to support the new program, Smeltzer added.<\/p>\n<p>While undergraduate degrees in engineering can lead to a wide range of careers, all of them involve problem-solving, design and math. These will be important areas of focus in the new curriculum, said King, whose teaching load will include courses in design, analog circuits, fluid mechanics and mathematical modeling.<\/p>\n<p>Though the program has only recently received final approval, seven incoming first-year students have declared as engineering majors, and several others are interested.<\/p>\n<p>One of those new engineering majors is <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/03\/three-yoder-scholars-bring-hosts-of-talent-to-eastern-mennonite-university\/\">Ben Stutzman<\/a>, from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who plans on a career in architecture. Moyer spent three semesters in 91短视频\u2019s pre-engineering program before transferring to Drexel University in Philadelphia, where he and his hundreds of classmates sometimes had to put their student ID numbers rather than their names on all their assignments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI decided to go to 91短视频 because I really wasn\u2019t into the mega-school atmosphere,\u201d said Moyer, now a project engineer working on a new composite airplane wing for Boeing in Everett, Washington. \u201cHere we bring in lots of folks from the big state schools. Upcoming renovations to the west half of the building will provide more space for the new program, including a laboratory with specialized equipment like 3-D printers.
