{"id":36512,"date":"2018-01-17T13:37:48","date_gmt":"2018-01-17T18:37:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=36512"},"modified":"2018-05-24T09:23:58","modified_gmt":"2018-05-24T13:23:58","slug":"emu-host-memorial-service-may-cjp-founding-donor-james-payne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/emu-host-memorial-service-may-cjp-founding-donor-james-payne\/","title":{"rendered":"91¶ÌÊÓƵ to host memorial service in May for CJP founding donor James Payne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>James Payne, a founding donor of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\">Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a> at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ who also was involved in the center\u2019s initial curriculum development, died Dec. 21, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>He passed away in his Richmond, Virginia, home just months after losing his wife of 60 years, Marian Yoder Payne, on Aug. 6, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>A remembrance, written by his family and published in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, shared that after his five children and nine grandchildren, \u201cJames was equally proud of the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding (CJP) at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ. He and Marian were founding donors and strong supporters of CJP. James often said it was the second best investment he ever made &#8211; after his children.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commerce.cashnet.com\/cashneti\/selfserve\/DonationRecurrChoice.aspx?PC=91¶ÌÊÓƵGIVE-ENDW&amp;ItemCount=1\">Click here to donate to the Payne Family Endowed Scholarship<\/a>.<\/aside>\n<p>A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ\u2019s Martin Chapel, 1181 Smith Avenue. In lieu of flowers, <a href=\"https:\/\/commerce.cashnet.com\/cashneti\/selfserve\/DonationRecurrChoice.aspx?PC=91¶ÌÊÓƵGIVE-ENDW&amp;ItemCount=1\">donations may be made<\/a> to the Payne Family Endowed Scholarship, which funds graduate studies for students at CJP.<\/p>\n<h3>Helping CJP&#8217;s light to shine around the world<\/h3>\n<p>The Paynes began their support of CJP in 1993, helping to fund the new center at their undergraduate alma mater. An educator, James was among those consulted by then-sociology professor Vernon Jantzi when he was tasked with developing CJP\u2019s curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>The couple helped to fund several initiatives and projects of CJP over the years, many of which were designed to share the story of empowered peacebuilders and peacebuilding initiatives around the world.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\">Read more about the Paynes\u2019 contributions to CJP in <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/2015\/07\/intersecting-paths-towards-justice-and-peace\/\">a Peacebuilder magazine article<\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cMy parents often said that \u2018CJP would be a shining light for the world,\u2019\u201d remembers their daughter Barb Swan. \u201cThey felt their support for CJP was a way for them to leave a lasting and meaningful legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2013 and 2014, as CJP approached its 20th anniversary, the Paynes met with CJP Executive Director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=jb459\">Daryl Byler<\/a> to ask two questions: \u201cHow can CJP\u2019s peacebuilding philosophy become more globally recognized? How can CJP expand its impact in the world?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the projects they funded was a special double issue of Peacebuilder magazine in 2015 to explore the impact of 12 initiatives around the world that emerged from CJP\u2019s Summer Peacebuilding Institute.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Teacher, builder, artist<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>James Payne was born Sept. 2, 1931 to Gladys (Roth) and A. Roy Payne in Pocomoke City, Maryland, but spent the majority of his childhood in Kishacoquillas Valley, Belleville, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>He led a rich and varied life, working as a milk inspector, builder, minister, missionary, teacher and college professor. He spent two years in Ethiopia as a builder before marriage.
