{"id":40381,"date":"2018-11-06T09:46:53","date_gmt":"2018-11-06T14:46:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=40381"},"modified":"2018-11-26T10:38:00","modified_gmt":"2018-11-26T15:38:00","slug":"annual-gala-to-feature-jazz-and-wind-ensembles-orchestra-and-choirs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/annual-gala-to-feature-jazz-and-wind-ensembles-orchestra-and-choirs\/","title":{"rendered":"Annual gala to feature jazz and wind ensembles, orchestra and choirs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fall 2018 music gala at 91短视频 will highlight the university\u2019s many ensembles \u2013 and a \u201clullaby\u201d requiem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The annual event is 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, in Lehman Auditorium, with a freewill offering to benefit the music scholarship fund.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first half of the concert will feature the 91短视频 jazz and wind ensembles conducted by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=rac2237\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bob Curry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the orchestra conducted by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=bpb668\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benjamin Bergey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the second half, Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=rek2227\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ryan Keebaugh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will conduct the combined choirs and orchestra in a performance of Gabriel Faur\u00e9\u2019s Requiem Mass.<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/music\/\">Learn more about music at 91短视频.<\/a><\/aside>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The evening ranks among concerts at 91短视频 as \u201cone of the biggies,\u201d said Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=jr582\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Richardson<\/span><\/a>, music department chair.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a uniquely combined effort,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019ll see faculty performing along with students \u2013 part of the ethos of our department\u2019s sense of community.\u201d That community includes music majors but also other students, as \u201cmany of the people that make up our ensembles are doing it for their own edification \u2013 and we like that,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have open doors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mass text has been set by many composers including Mozart and Verdi, but Faur\u00e9\u2019s version is unique, said Richardson, who will be a baritone soloist alongside junior performance major and soprano Kiara Norman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a lullaby for death,\u201d he said. \u201cThat might sound morose, but that term is very much meant to imply just the opposite.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faur\u00e9, an organist and therefore constantly around funeral music, excluded from the mass parts that \u201creally had to do with the anxiety or fear or unpleasantness associated with death,\u201d Richardson said. \u201cIt\u2019s a very serene, tranquil approach to one\u2019s end.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of the movement about the wrath of God, Faur\u00e9 included a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pie Jesu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> section. He also used different text for the final movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Faur\u00e9 noted, \u201cIt is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn my estimation,\u201d Keebaugh said, \u201cIt\u2019s all about love, and what\u2019s accomplished here during one\u2019s lifetime.
