Those who register to attend will receive a webinar link and will be able to interact with \u00d3 Tuama through Q &amp; A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/academics\/padraig\">Follow this link to register for all events.<\/a><\/strong><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>His book <em>In the Shelter: Finding a Home in the World <\/em>(Hodder &amp; Stoughton, 2015) is this year&#8217;s Common Read selection, one book the campus community is encouraged to read, reflect on, and engage with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The author of four books of poetry and prose, \u00d3 Tuama is known for integrating themes of language, power, conflict and religion. He is also a peacebuilder and mediator. From 2014-19, he led the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.corrymeela.org\/\">Corrymeela Community<\/a>, Ireland\u2019s oldest peace and reconciliation organisation. He hosts the <a href=\"https:\/\/onbeing.org\/series\/poetry-unbound\/\"><em>Poetry Unbound<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>podcast from On Being Studios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Monday, September 14&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>6 p.m. \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/academics\/padraig#monday\">Writers Read<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00d3 Tuama will read excerpts from his poetry and prose. The event is open to the public via Zoom and live stream.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tuesday, September 15&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>11 a.m. \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/academics\/padraig#tuesday\">Seminary Chapel and Talkback<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00d3 Tuama will speak on &#8220;Jesus of Nazareth: Strange man in strange times,&#8221; looking at Jesus through the lenses of story, poetry, literary analysis, and imagination. This event is open to the public via Zoom and live stream.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>3 p.m. \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/academics\/padraig#books\">Books and Brews with WMRA<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This live event, open to all, will also be available via Zoom and live stream. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmra.org\/post\/virtual-books-brews-september-15-2020?\">WMRA&#8217;s Books and Brews<\/a> moderator Mary Katharine Froehlich will speak with \u00d3 Tuama about &#8220;how poetry, books and reading kept me safe.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wednesday, September 16<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>10:15 a.m. \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/academics\/padraig#wednesday\">Convocation and Talkback<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hello to Language. What does it mean to use language today? \u2014 in a time of pandemic, in the latest racist decade of a racist era, in a time where truth is questioned and language is fake if it\u2019s labelled fake. P\u00e1draig \u00d3 Tuama will explore the power of language; power to harm and power to heal, and consider that power in conversation both with story and time. How do we tell stories about the times we are in? How long do we imagine the times we are in will be the times we are in? Available via Zoom and live stream.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thursday, September 17<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>12 p.m. \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/academics\/padraig#thursday\">Discussion with the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Insights and Mistakes from Ireland for Isolated Times<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, Ireland will mark 100 years since partition. During that time, there have been numerous sustained periods of conflict about British-Irish dynamics: conflict that has been witnessed both on the streets and in policies. Given this hundred years of conflict and attempts at brokering peace, what lessons might be relevant for today?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Friday, September 18<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>10 a.m. \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/academics\/padraig#friday\">Talk with the Furious Flower Poetry Center at JMU<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jmu.edu\/furiousflower\/\">Furious Flower Poetry Center<\/a> is the nation&#8217;s first academic center for Black poetry. In &#8220;The shelter of stories in uncertain times,&#8221; \u00d3 Tuama will talk with Executive Director Joanne Gabbin about the poet&#8217;s role in modeling truth-telling, social justice, and activism.
