Ron Shultz, PhD
Associate Professor of Education
91短视频

Across the country, bilingual teachers are in short supply. This has direct implications for Dual Language programs. Professional literature also suggests that equally problematic to the recruitment of DL teachers is their retention. Multiple factors can influence a teacher鈥檚 choice to leave the DL classroom, or perhaps even the teaching profession. However, if we are to reverse this trend, greater understanding of these dynamics and an intentional effort to address the related challenges and concerns must be considered. This presentation focuses on efforts to better understand the needs and experiences of teachers in a particular DL program, while also creating opportunities for increased support, with the ultimate goal of increasing teachers鈥 sense of competence and longevity in their role.

Dr. Ron Shultz is an Associate Professor of Teacher Education and the Coordinator for the PK-6 Elementary Education Program at 91短视频. He also serves as the Field Placement Coordinator for the department. He earned a B.S. degree in Liberal Arts studies from 91短视频 with a PK-8 teaching certification, an M.A. in Education from Millersville University, and a Ph.D. George Mason University with a focus on teacher education and multicultural/multilingual education. Ron has been teaching in the Education Department at 91短视频 since the fall of 2011. In addition to preparing future elementary teachers, Ron’s research interests include bilingual education and culturally responsive teaching.

What happens when a White woman, Phoebe, contacts a Black woman, Betty, saying she suspects they are connected through slavery? First surprise? Betty responds, 鈥淗ello, Cousin.鈥

Betty had fought for an education and won. She broke through the concrete ceiling in the workplace and succeeded. A documentary of her life was about to debut. Without thinking, she invites Phoebe to a family dinner and the premiere of the documentary. Second surprise? She forgot to tell her family who was coming to dinner.

Betty finds an activist partner in Phoebe. Cousins indeed, they commit to a path of reconciliation.

In alternating chapters, each tells her dramatic story鈥攆rom Betty鈥檚 experience as one of the first Black children to attend her desegregated school, to Phoebe鈥檚 eventual question to Betty: 鈥淗ow do I begin to repair the harms?鈥

Piercingly honest. Includes a working reparations project which the two women conceived together.

Dr. Betty Kilby Fisher Baldwin grew up in rural Culpeper and Warren counties, Virginia.  She was a pioneer in school desegregation.  Thanks to her father鈥檚 determination, she entered and graduated from Warren County High School after suing the school board, based on the landmark Supreme Court Brown vs. Board of Education decision of 1954.  Betty started her employment as a factory worker and climbed the corporate ladder to achieve executive management employment.  Betty holds a BA in Business Management from Shenandoah University, an MBA from Nova University, and an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Shenandoah University.  After she retired, she wrote and published her autobiography, Wit, Will & Walls.  Betty speaks frequently with Phoebe about making connections across the racial divide to create a more just and peaceful world.

Phoebe Kilby聽grew up in Baltimore, and graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1970.聽 After obtaining a BS in Botany and a Master鈥檚 Degree in Environmental Management from Duke University, she had a long career as an urban and environmental planner. 聽With concerns about the morality and wisdom of war, Phoebe went back to school in 2003 to obtain a Graduate Certificate in Conflict Transformation from the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding, 91短视频. At 91短视频, she discovered the restorative justice movement and a new group forming called Coming to the Table. 聽She and Betty are going to tell you about how discovery of Coming to the Table and their connected personal family histories led them to meet.
