Join our storytellers for reflections on themes in the 91��Ƶ Common Read, . Come to hear scripture and reflections on times when someone incarcerated was treated unjustly and when mercy was needed as a restorative action. Reflections will focus on themes like racial injustice, criminal justice, brokenness in communities, transformation and restoration.�� Let’s ask together, “how do we embody the kingdom of God in settings needing mercy?”��

Storytellers from the Harrisonburg community:
Rev. Costella Forney, serves as pastor of John Wesley United Methodist Church here in Harrisonburg.

Darrel Hostetter, graduate of of Eastern Mennonite College (1977) and Seminary (1982), served as Chaplain of Rockingham County Jail from 1975-79, partnered with Swazi indigenous church leaders in Bible studies and leadership development in Eswatini, southern Africa for about 11 years, was a volunteer chaplain of Lancaster County Prison 2013-18, and is presently retired but relating to 5-10 incarcerated individuals and returning citizens in PA and VA.

Dr. Jerry Holsopple, professor of visual and communication arts, shares original songs inspired by his meeting Bryan Stevenson, author of Just Mercy.��Jerry Holsopple is an artist, photographer and renowned videographer, teaches photography and digital media-related courses at 91��Ƶ.

The VeRONAka movie is a 10-minute comedy/drama with a documentary twist. The film is a fictionalized version of the true story of our clan mothers giving COVID-19 a Mohawk name so that we are able to respect the illness, understand why it is here and then invite it to leave. The main character – VeRONAka – is unleashed by the upheaval in the world and is terrorizing her community. But she didn’t count on the power of the Mohawk Aunties.
The film also features an audio interview with Wa’kerakátste Louise McDonald – the Mohawk Bear Clan clan mother from Akwesasne Mohawk Territory – who named the virus.

Created with all-Indigenous principal cast and crew on Rotinonhson:ni Territory – VeRONAka is a timely movie and one that will help all of us transform the fear and the chaos in the world. It’s also funny.

Join the campus ministries leadership team for the first campus worship service of the semester launching this year’s campus ministries theme, Imago DEI which is often defined as image of God. () We will be exploring how diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) provide unique lenses into reflecting the character (image) of God.

Professor Jerry Holsopple will help us explore Imago DEI through his work with iconography and digital photography as spiritual art forms. How might we better understand God by more fully knowing one another across differences?
