BSU helps prep historic home to be future museum site. The Dallard/Newman House and
Bethel AME Church on Kelley Street were added to the Virginia Landmarks Register in
2017. A local organization hopes to convert the Dallard/Newman House into a museum,
library and headquarters for the nonprofit association.
Seniors Brandon Chupp, Nicole Litwiller, Luke Litwiller and Rachel Holderman '18 sing
in the Ana K music building at Academia Menonita Betania in Puerto Rico, where they
were spending a week of service helping clean up and repair hurricane damage.
International Student Organization (ISO) president Paul Kayembe presents Phoebe Coffie
with one of three ISO Excellency Award as 91¶ÌÊÓƵ undergraduate
dean Deidre L. Smeltzer looks on. The April gala raised more than $5,000 for female
survivors of sexual assault in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Reading Royals program, started by head coach Melvin Felix, brings members of
the men's basketball team into 11 classrooms to work on literacy skills with students
every other week.
Volunteers from Earth Keepers, a environmental organization at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ,
helped with the annual Blacks Run Clean-Up Day.
One of 91¶ÌÊÓƵ four Y-trip groups during spring break headed
to Valdosta, Georgia, for Habitat for Humanity’s Collegiate Challenge. Three other
groups spent at least part of the week in Georgia at various sites.
Ministry Inquiry Program participant Abigail Shelly, a junior education major at Eastern
Mennonite University, attended the Aug. 4 Immigration Community Day hosted by Mennonite
Central Committee in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The 91¶ÌÊÓƵ field hockey team raised more than $1,200 to purchase
40 "Sweet Cases" for foster children through the nonprofit organization Together We
Rise. They decorated the duffel bags, filled them with items, and returned them to
the organization for dispersal. The project had special meaning for top fundraiser
Bri Miller, who is adopted.
Service in class
Various 91¶ÌÊÓƵ classes are designated as "Community Learning" courses. In these courses students
to get involved in the community through internships, observation experiences, or
class projects. Each student needs to take one community learning course as part
of .
Service in co-curriculars
Many 91¶ÌÊÓƵ clubs, organizations and are engaged in service locally or globally. 91¶ÌÊÓƵ's oldest student club, Y-Serve plans regular service trips during fall and spring break. In the past they have worked
with Jubilee Partners, Serving with Appalachian Peoples (SWAP), Casa Alterna, and
Habitat for Humanity.
